Metal complexes, which are comprised of metal ions and organic ligands, construct new various structures. The unique features of the materials are emergence of new properties and functions that are not found in their components, metal ions and ligand. My research group focuses on syntheses of new metal complexes that can remove perchlorate ions from water. Although this anion inhibits growth of newborns and children, removal from water is quite difficult because of the high solubility. Our metal complex can remove perchlorate ion from water to below 24.5 ppb, which is concentration level considered to be safe for children. Another interest is syntheses of new model complexes that mimic biological functions. For example, we have succeeded in syntheses of new cobalt porphyrin complexes, which showed a C=C bond cleavage in the ligand by activated O2 molecule under mild condition. We will explore new metal complexes, which unprecedented unique functions.
