Six departments of Shizuoka University, “Research Institute of Electronics”, “Research Institute of Green Science and Technology”, “Graduate School of Science and Technology”, “Cooperative Major in Medical Photonics”, “Headquarters for promotion of Interdisciplinary Domain Research” and “Future Scientists' School program” jointly held “The 9th International Symposium toward the Future of Advanced Research at Shizuoka University 2023 ~ Joint International Workshops on Advanced Nanovision Science / Advanced Green Science / Promotion of Global Young Researchers, on the basis of Interdisciplinary Domain Researches~” online on Wednesday, March 1st.

From the viewpoint of preventing the spread of the new corona virus, this symposium has been held via Zoom since 2021. With the aim of deepening the diversity, internationality, and innovation of research and education at Shizuoka University, about 100 researchers and students in research fields centered on informatics, energy systems, nanovision science, nanomaterials, basic research, environmental science, integrated bioscience and medical photonics participated in the symposium.

The symposium began with the opening remarks by Kazuyuki Hizume, President of Shizuoka University. In the morning session, 49 students and young researchers were divided into 3 sessions according to their research fields and presented their research. The presenters included 3 high school students who are participating in the "Future Scientist’ School (FSS)" operated by Shizuoka University as a consignment project of the "Global Science Campus" of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). After the oral presentations, the presenters had a question-and-answer session and exchanged opinions with the participants about their research in breakout rooms set up individually.

The afternoon session, Prof. Junji Kido, from Yamagata University, Specially Appointed Prof. Tsutomu Miyasaka, from Toin University of Yokohama, and Prof. Koichi Takeda, from Nagoya University gave plenary lectures. And then, it was followed by 4 invited speakers from universities and research institutes in Bangladesh, India, Romania and Japan.

At the award ceremony after all the sessions finished, 5 graduate students and 3 high school students won Best Presentation Award.

This was the third time the symposium was held online, and the breakout room enhanced more active discussions same as last year. It was a great opportunity to further promote international joint research in the future and to foster researchers who will lead the next generation globally. We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all the speakers and all those involved in this event.
