The enzymes responsible for the breakdown of cellulose and chitin—natural, high-molecular-weight solid materials—are comprised of a combination of catalytic and adsorption domains. It is hypothesized that over the course of evolution, various microorganisms have produced a diverse array of enzymes. The objective of this study is to engineer novel enzymes that can be utilized for the purposes of recycling and environmental purification. This endeavor involves the artificial evolution of enzymes capable of degrading plastics, which are man-made, high-molecular-weight solid materials. This approach draws upon the insights gained from the understanding of the mechanisms of enzymes involved in the breakdown of cellulose and chitin.
