The composition of the population of Japan has changed dramatically through the rapid progression of an aging population and declining children. In particular, the work force population decreased from 1998 and the percentage of elderly people in Japan is steadily increasing, estimated to reach 27.4% of overall population in Japan by 2025. Humankind and ecological systems are threatened by global warming and worldwide environmental disruption. Therefore, the contribution of science technology for the construction of new systems to stop the rapid and severe changes in society and environment is critical.

In Green Chemistry Research Division, the main subjects to be focused are the creation of innovation and screening of new materials for food safety and waste management. We will contribute to the realization of sustainable growth for productive and active life. Research and outlines in this division are described below.

Research on the screening of various bioactive compounds from nature

In order to realize the healthy life of people, various bioactive compounds from nature are screened and identified; biological functions of these bioactive compounds are analyzed. These bioactive compounds are utilized for the realization of secure and safe life and food security.

Research on waste management for coexistence with nature

1.Research on wood biorefinery to generate reusable resources and energy

Efficient degradation of lignin and efficient saccharification technique of cellulose are needed for the usage of wood to produce reusable resources. In this research, efficient wood biorefinery is carried out by the biological treatment of lignin, saccharification and efficient usage of cellulose from wood.

2.Establishment of detection, chemical detoxification system of toxic chemicals

Detection and detoxification systems of toxic chemicals are needed for food security and safe society. These systems are developed and applied to the construction of clean waste management.

Research on advanced nanobiotechnology for the rapid detection of infectious disease using novel biomaterials

Biomaterials lead to the generation of new detection system of chemicals, proteins and viruses owing to their ability to recognize biomolecules and induce various industry innovations based on manufacturing. In this research, establishment of rapid infectious disease detection system (influenza virus etc), vaccine development and bio-imaging of proteins and cells are carried out and these technologies are applied to food security and safety of society in an aging population to achieve higher level of welfare.
