「Cyanobacteriochromes: a rainbow of sensors and possibilities」

概要
Human civilization depends on agricultural cultivation of crop plants. Such photosynthetic organisms use photosensory proteins to adapt their biology to changing natural light environments. For example, land plants use phytochrome photoreceptors to measure the ratio of red and far-red light, allowing a plant to detect shading from neighboring plants. Cyanobacteria contain both phytochromes and distantly related cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs). Like phytochromes, CBCRs photoconvert between two states with distinct spectral and biochemical properties. However, CBCRs are much more diverse than phytochromes and are able to sense near-ultraviolet and visible light. More recently, we reported CBCRs able to detect far-red and even near-infrared light. An ongoing survey of these proteins has demonstrated that far-red sensing has evolved multiple times using different protein-chromophore interactions and is associated with a broad range of photoproducts. CBCRs thus seem poised to become useful tools in synthetic biology, imaging applications, and beyond.
